Any lessons or resources that require the use of YouTube or other social media platforms should be supervised by an adult.

Lesson 1

Listen to the songs. Ask the children what they think of the music and what effect it is meant to have on an audience. How does it grip an audience? – Through use of louds and quiets (they might suggest heavy and soft which is timbre – using deeper instruments to create a bigger louder sound and higher instruments for a more delicate sound). Recap on what dynamics are – the loud and quiet parts of a piece of music and how this might have an impact. Beatles is a great example of how a typical pop song with instruments sounds ‘thinner’ than the orchestra run in the middle of the song.

Children can then have a go at creating their own composition, using instruments if you have any, or any boxes (for percussion) lying around the house! They should practice this, and perform where possible. They can use the dynamics poster as a prompt to think about including a range of volumes in their piece.
